The city was featured among the top startup ecosystem in the Global Startup Ecosystems Report 2018 by Startup Genome for its unmatched technological readiness and was also named the best spot for business by the same organization earlier this year.The tech sector in Sydney is soaring and is the largest one among all Australian startup ecosystems.

OnDeck Australia

The first company on our list of top Sydney startups for 2019 is leading fintech brand OnDeck Australia. It raised $75 million in a debt financing round in July 2018 from Credit Suisse; this is the first round of funding for the top startup in Sydney. OnDeck Australia is a loan specialist for small and medium-sized businesses that are looking for reliable financing options. Their proprietary credit scoring system OnDeck Score is helping the Sydney based startup identify the companies that are eligible for a loan based on criteria that is not limited to the business owner’s credit score.

Canva

Sydney based startup Canva is an online designing platform that offers a lot of easy-to-use tools for designing and publishing content in a wide variety of formats. The company was founded in 2012 by Melanie Perkins, Cameron Adams, and Cliff Obrecht and has grown to be one of the unicorns in the top Sydney startups for 2019.  2018 was a year full of milestones in terms of financial activities with Canva raising $40 million in its Series C round followed by the acquisition of presentation platform Zeetings. The Series C round for this top startup in Sydney was led by Sequoia  Capital and featured Blackbird Ventures and Felicis Ventures as well, with total investments amounting to $83 million as of date.

Athena Mortgage

Athena Mortgage is a top startup in Sydney in the fintech segment that was founded in 2017 by ex-bankers Michael Starky and Nathan Walsh. It is a cloud-based digital home loan platform that aims to help borrowers save on their loan repayment. The Sydney based startup was in the limelight with the closing of two funding rounds in 2018. The most recent one was the Series B round which is also the largest round so far helping the company join the club of the top Sydney startups for 2019 poised for a brilliant growth. The round helped Athena Mortgage raise $25 million from Hostplus,  National Australia Bank, AirTree Ventures, and lead investor Square Peg Capital.

uno

Sydney based startup uno is an online mortgage broker platform that has completed four rounds till date raising $46.1 million. The last round was announced in February 2018 where the fintech startup picked up $25 million from Westpac. uno has remained a top startup in Sydney since its inception helping a lot of loan seekers find the right plan for them so that they can make an informed choice. Vincent Turner founded this disruptive Sydney based startup in 2015 and is leading the company as its CEO.  The company currently works with four big banks and 20 other small to medium sized lenders.

Data Republic

The next promising company on our list of top Sydney startups for 2019 is SaaS startup Data Republic. It has created a secure and platform that helps companies to share date between them and ensure full control over it. It is a top startup in Sydney and is planning to set shop in new markets in the US and Singapore. Data Republic plans to do so with the $22 million raised from its Series B round.  Singtel Innov8  led this round with the support of Singapore Airlines, Ryder Capital, Reinventure Group, Qualgro VC, and ANZ. This is the second round of funding in 2018 for the Sydney based startup which was founded in 2014 by Danny Gilligan and Paul McCarney.

Flare HR

Flare HR is a Sydney based startup that was established in 2015 by founders Colin Mierowsky, Daniel Cohen, James Windon, Jan Pacas, and Saul Kaplan. The company is a SaaS provider of a dynamic software that is helping make HR processes more streamlines and less manual. It picked A$21 million from its Series B round Point72 Ventures(lead investor), Tank Stream Ventures, Reinventure Group, BridgeLane Capital, and Acorn Capital. Flare HR joins the club of top Sydney startups for 2019 after this round which gives it the financial push to propel towards higher growth and user base.

Skippr Cash Flow

Skippr Cash Flow another young company among the top Sydney startups for 2019. The startup is a cutting-edge technology startup that is helping small and medium-sized enterprises get access to an efficient cash flow tool to predict and understand all the facets of cash flow. 2018 saw several fintech startups in  Sydney get handsomely funded and Brighte is one of them. The Sydney based startup is online on the spot finance platform to make it easier for people to make their solar powered. The company’s novel innovation has attracted $61 million till date with the highest amount raised in 2018 at $53.5 million from debt financing rounds and its Series B round of funding.  The new investments have given the innovative fintech startup the support to grow even more next year making it one of the top Sydney based startups for 2019. Brighte is the brainchild of founder and CEO Katherine McConnell.

Sydney based startup AgriWebb made headlines this year with announcements of its new acquisition and fresh funds received on 20th August 2018. It acquired agro software brand FarmWizard and raised AS$14 million from Wheatsheaf Group on the same day. The agro software company is expected to make more headlines in the coming year as well as one of the top Sydney startups for 2019. AgriWebb  was founded in 2013 by Kevin Baum, Justin Webb and John Fargher in 2013 to make livestock management and production more efficient and less time to consume by leveraging technology. It is a farm management technology software current total investments of $14.4 million.

Fat Zebra

Fat Zebra is a fast-growing internet payment gateway startup set up by Pred Dragila in 2012.
